The Prized Pamir

A DigitalNZ Story by History Geek

The Pamir was a four masted barque that was launched in 1905 and went into service with a German shipping company. It made headlines in 1941 when it sailed into Wellington Harbour under a Finnish flag and was seized as a prize of war. She would spend the next seven years under the New Zealand flag until the N.Z. Government gave her back to Finland. Many New Zealanders have fond memories of her time in these waters. Sadly she would be lost during a hurricane in 1957 with a high loss of life.
